Side-By-Side Maintenance and Troubleshooting Tips
UTVs, also known as utility vehicles or side-by-sides (SxS), are popular powersports vehicles due to their versatility, durability, and ability to handle tough jobs. Side-by-sides are popular with professional workers and off-road enthusiasts alike. But just like any other type of vehicle, side-by-sides can break down. Read on to learn the top tips for troubleshooting your utility vehicle's problem before hiring a mechanic.
Check the Coolant Levels and Change the Oil
Make sure you have enough coolant. Although it's not necessary to check before every ride, it may be a concern if your engine is overheating or if you’re seeing fluids pooling beneath the utility vehicle. Checking your oil, however, may be the most important thing you can do for UTV maintenance. Check it before every ride, and be sure not to overfill.
Check Out Your Air Filter
UTVs can't run effectively without a clean air filter. Maintaining it is an easy fix. Check your air filter regularly. Look at the filter box’s condition. If it's dirty and grimy, replace it. You can also buy a reusable filter that you can clean when dirty and put back in place.
Replace Spark Plugs
If you notice your SxS sputtering, check your spark plugs. This should be done regularly. Look for corrosion and replace the spark plugs when needed. If you're unsure about this, check your owner's manual. The manufacturer guide will tell you how often you need to change your spark plugs. The more you use your UTV, the more often you'll need to replace the plugs.
Install a New Battery
Most batteries have a fairly long life. However, after four or five years, you'll probably need a new battery. Using your UTV frequently and in adverse weather conditions will shorten its lifespan.
To make your battery last as long as possible, keep your original battery charger and store your UTV in a garage or other shelter for protection from foul weather. It's easy to tell when your battery needs to be replaced. Charge the battery and try starting your utility vehicle; if it doesn't start, replace the battery.
