Performing a Pre-Ride Inspection for Your Motorsports Vehicle

May. 3 2023 Safety By Roseville Motorsports

Here at Roseville Motorsports, we understand the desire to hit the trail the moment you arrive. However, forgoing a pre-ride safety inspection for your motorsports vehicle can be dangerous. It is far better to discover a problem before the ride rather than during it. That is why we have put together this guide to performing a pre-ride inspection on your motorsports vehicle.

1. Review Your Owner’s Manual

While we can provide general information applicable to most models, there may be model-specific considerations that we cannot account for. Luckily, your owner’s manual should be able to tell you everything you need to know in this regard. If you have lost your copy or cannot read it for any reason, simply check the manufacturer’s website for details about your model.

2. Fluid and Performance Checks

Your motorsports vehicle depends upon engine oil, coolant, brake fluid, and fuel to function properly. Before you set off, make sure all of these fluids are topped off and in good condition. You should also make sure that your air filter is clean and that your suspension is free from excessive wear and tear.

3. Tire Pressure and Condition

Use your owner’s manual and a pressure gauge to ensure that your vehicle’s tires are inflated to the correct PSI. You should also check the tire itself for tread wear and other signs of damage. Remember that riding on a compromised tire is extremely dangerous.

4. Lights and Electrical System

You never know when you’ll need your lights, so be sure that yours are working properly. You should also test the other important components of your vehicle’s electrical system, like the ignition and kill switch, to make sure they still function as well.

5. Test Out the Controls

Find a safe place to do a quick test run on your motorsports vehicles. Make sure the accelerator, brakes, and throttle all work as intended. Pay close attention to what you are hearing, as unusual sounds are a sign that there is a malfunction that you cannot see or feel.

6. Perform a Last-Minute Inspection

Before you hit the trail, take one last look at your motorsports vehicle for any signs of wear or damage. The last thing you want is a preventable breakdown mid-ride, so be very thorough in your inspection.
