Motorcycle Maintenance
Roseville Motorsports is your California motorcycle dealer, located in Rocklin and serving Roseville and Sacramento. Read on to learn how you can easily maintain your motorcycle at home with some simple tools and know-how.
1. Review Your Owner’s Manual
While the tips below are broadly applicable to most motorcycles, it’s always good to know the specifics for your make and model. Keep your owner’s manual handy so you can consult with it. Use it as a space to jot down any part replacements or maintenance you perform. This will be a handy record when it comes time to sell the bike.
2. Inspect Tires
Make sure that both the front and rear tires of your bike are pressured adequately by checking them with a tire-pressure gauge. Air up your tires before a long ride. Also, inspect each tire for cracks in the sidewall, balding treads or embedded objects that would merit a tire repair or replacement. It’s never a good idea to ride on bad tires.
3. Change Oil
Just like the oil in your car or truck, the oil in your motorcycle needs to be changed on a regular basis. Oil helps to lubricate the engine so that it runs smoothly. You can remove the dipstick, wipe it, reinsert it and remove it again to check the color and consistency of oil. Sludgy, opaque oil needs a change. Watch for metallic shavings in the oil, as this can indicate that engine parts are grinding together in a way they shouldn’t be.
4. Test Lights, Signals & Brakes
Ride your bike around the block at least once a week to test out your braking, signals and lights. You can have a friend check that the lights and signals work from behind. Ride slowly and try different types of stops so you can listen for any strange squealing noises or feel for any grinding from your brakes. Any brake issues need prompt addressing to prevent a serious accident.
5. Replace Fuel & Filter
Your motorcycle will run best on a full tank of clean, fresh gasoline. Make sure to top up your tank and if you leave your bike in storage for a while, add a fuel stabilizer to the gasoline to prevent corrosive water separation, particularly if you use gasoline with ethanol. For best results, try to use high-octane gasoline instead..
The fuel filter in your motorcycle’s engine also needs to be changed regularly to ensure that it’s filtering out all the nasty particulates that can damage your engine. You may notice that your filter is clogged if your engine is slow to start or makes weird sounds.
