Common Reasons ATV Shakes or Wobbles and How to Fix It
Trail riding requires a suspension that can handle difficult terrain, and ATVs are built to handle a little jostling. However, if you are experiencing shaking or wobbling even on flat ground, that may be a sign of a deeper issue. To help you diagnose the problem and take steps to fix it, Roseville Motorsports has created this guide to fix ATV shaking.
ATV Wheel Hub Bearings
Many quad owners don’t know this, but the lubrication in an ATV’s wheel hub bearings eventually dries out. This can cause the bearings to experience excessive wear and tear, so they need to be replaced periodically. Luckily, it is fairly simple to do: jack up whichever wheel is having the issue and check to see if it wiggles around. If you notice too much movement, you won’t need any special tools to make the replacement.
Balance the Tires
If you experience shaking or vibrating when riding at speeds of 35 MPH or higher, you may want to try balancing your ATV’s tires. This is another fix that can be performed without the aid of a professional, although you will need to purchase a special bubble tool or balance beads. We recommend the balance beads because they are easier to use and allow you to check your ATVs’ balance at any time. As a bonus, balancing your quad’s tires prevents excess wear and provides you with better control.
ATV Front End Alignment
Most manufacturers recommend you get your ATV aligned shortly after completing your first 100 miles on the vehicle. After this, you should align the quad every few months depending on how often you use it. Those who frequently ride over rough and rocky terrain should pay special attention, as these kinds of trails really knock things out of alignment. To align, first, straighten the handlebars and get a view of your quad from the front. If your tires are not pointed in your direction, they need to be realigned. Luckily, the alignment process is quick and easy to perform.
